Keyword Research Tips

The #1 Keyword Research ToolKeyword Research is a vital part of any successful internet marketing campaign. I use a couple of different approaches for Keyword Research depending on if I am building a Google Adwords PPC campaign or whether I’m working on SEO. First let’s look at some Keyword Research tips for SEO.

Keyword Research tips for SEO purposes include the following:

When choosing your keywords keep in mind the competition.

If you want to get to the first page of Google it will be almost impossible if you are competing on a term such as “weight loss” which has over 64,000,000 competing pages. If you are in the weight loss market and want to get to number one in Google you’d be better of targeting a keyword such as “weight loss after pregnancy” which has only 87,000 competing pages (when using phrase match).

Choose keywords with high enough search counts.

You might think that your best keyword is “Joe Blogs Violin Shop”. While that may be the name of your shop and important to you, it’s useless if no-one is searching in Google using that term. Make sure you choose a search term that has high enough search volume – the minimum search volume I go for varies depending on the market I’m in but as a general rule I won’t go after a keyword if it can’t bring me at least 1000 new visitors per month.

Use a quality Keyword Research Tool.

Perhaps this is the most important of all the keyword research tips I've mentioned. Use a quality Keyword Research Tool. I personally use a combination of Market Samurai and Traffic Travis - both of these are paid tools but free trial versions are available. If you don’t have money to invest I recommend using Google’s Keyword Suggestion Tool which can be found at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. While Google's Keyword tool is useful, you won't be able to access detailed information and analyze competition as you can with Market Samurai - I highly recommend getting a copy of the free trial version of Market Samurai.

The following are some tips for Keyword research tips for PPC Campaigns:

Be Aware of How Much each Keyword Costs

If you are in the weight loss niche and decide to start a Google AdWords campaign you need to be aware of how much each keyword will cost you each time someone clicks on it. A very generic keyword such as “fast weight loss” is likely to be very competitive and as a result you’ll pay through the roof for that keyword.

I use Market Samurai as a guide to knowing how much I’ll pay for keywords. It’s the most accurate tool I’ve found and has saved me thousands of dollars. Google Traffic Estimator https://adwords.google.com/select/TrafficEstimatorSandbox can also give you a very rough guide on keyword prices.

Go after long-tail Keywords (long tail keywords are phrases of 4 or more words)

In order to keep costs down and get more targeted traffic (which will convert better) go after long tail keywords. What I mean by this is instead of choosing a keyword such as “fast weight loss”, you might find one such as “fast weight loss after pregnancy” is much cheaper. You’ll also be able to tailor that keyword to a more targeted landing page which will result in much higher conversions.

Hopefully these keyword research tips give you a good primer on how to choose keywords effectively. If you are running a PPC Campaign you’ll end up saving hundreds and making thousands more if you use Commission Blueprint as a guideline.
